West Holt High School Repeats as

Northeast Nebraska Regional Envirothon Winner

The Envirothon program is for 9th-12th grade students designed to promote awareness about our natural environment. Students compete in a contest that tests their knowledge on a wide array of subjects relating to natural resources and the environment.  Eight Regional Envirothon competitions are held across Nebraska in the early spring.  The winning five-member team from each regional competition is then invited to represent their region at the Nebraska State Envirothon Competition with additional wildcard teams invited based on their regional competition scores. The state champion then goes on to represent Nebraska at the Canon Envirothon, which will be held in Pennsylvania this year.

February 29, the Northeast Nebraska Regional Envirothon was held at the Lifelong Learning Center in Norfolk.  However, due to the weather, a second contest was held March 14 for the teams unable to attend the contest during the Vo-Ag competition.  Twenty teams from 19 different schools across northeast and north central Nebraska participated in the regional Envirothon contest and were tested in the areas of Aquatics, Forestry, Policy, Range, Soils, Wildlife and a Special Topic for a chance to attend the State Envirothon Competition scheduled for May 5th at the 4-H Camp near Halsey.

This years winning team was from West Holt High School and consisted of Cole Gibbens, Brett Pacha, Dylan Liable, Cole Neibauer and Marcus Marcellus.  This is West Holt’s twelfth invitation to the Nebraska State Envirothon competition.  Station certificates were presented to:  Valentine High School in Special Topics; North Bend High School in Policy; and, West Holt High School in Forestry, Policy, Range, Soils, Aquatics and Wildlife.  Schools participating in this year’s competition included; Logan View, North Bend, Creighton, Crofton, Hartington, Verdigre, Ainsworth, Elgin, Pope John, Rock County, Valentine, West Boyd, Pender, Randolph, Blair, Allen, Wheeler Central, West Holt and Plainview.  The regional Envirothon contest is sponsored by the Upper Elkhorn NRD, Lower Elkhorn NRD and Agriculture Education Contest at Northeast Community College.
